Sentinel: Model and Texture

Well here's the Sentinel after a week's worth of texturing on top of him. This is just my section and I've yet to see how the entire model looks pieced together. As before, this is a collaborative project for Intro to 3D class and I worked pretty hard on this. I threw in a front and both of the model and textured model as well as a frontal of the UV map I laid out for him.

We had decided to go with a sort of Steampunk theme with our model which is why he looks so beat up, dirty, and he's in non-standard Sentinel colors.

Here was my idea of how I textured him. The tubes running throughout him and into the tank in his back are stitched tubes of leather (I'll have some closeup shots to submit later), and then the rest of him are various time appropriate metals. The tank is a blackened iron, the main body is a copper, his face, spine, rib boxes and face are aluminum, his shoulders and a few other small areas are iron and his rib tubes and handle looking things are brass.

Getting the metal to look right was a real challenge. Everything kept looking like plastic until a couple of the seniors in the DAC program helped me accomplish a Fresnel effect utilizing a sampler info node and ramp node in order to get that side reflectivity you see in real metals. Thanks a lot Ellie and Sam.

After texturing everything, I went back with a brush and started darkening and dirtying up edges, especially on the face to give him some grit. I also tried to make sure cracks and places where his parts met also collected some of that painted grime.

I won't go into too much more detail, but will answer any questions is people bring up any about my work. Hopefully seeing some of the closeups may help you understand a bit of my explanations and give you a better idea of how the textures came out.
